THE INDUSTRIAL METAVERSE by Jeff Winter

Few terms have risen and fallen as dramatically as “๐ฆ๐ž๐ญ๐š๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ๐ž.” At its peak in January 2022, the buzz surrounding the metaverse was almost deafening, promising to revolutionize how we interact with digital spaces. However, as with many hype cycles, the fervor has waned significantlyโ€”dropping to around 5% of its peak interest. (Source: https://lnkd.in/es-t2Tj2)

But hereโ€™s the thing: just because the term “metaverse” has fallen out of favor doesn’t mean the underlying concepts and innovations have lost their impact. The vision of interconnected virtual worlds, augmented reality (AR), and immersive experiences is still very much alive, reshaping industries from gaming and entertainment to remote work and education.

So, perhaps itโ€™s time to rethink our terminology. The “metaverse” as a term may have faded, but its essence is thriving.

The ๐ˆ๐ง๐๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ฅ ๐Œ๐ž๐ญ๐š๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ๐ž is the convergence of multiple technologies that together create an immersive three-dimensional virtual or a combination of virtual/physical industrial environment. As technology progresses, this metaverse will likely be accessible from any internet-connected device, including VR and AR devices, smartphones, tablets, laptops, and other equipment, from anywhere in the world.

In a report by Deloitte and Manufacturing Leadership Council, the manufacturing industry is primed for the adoption of the industrial metaverse, given its ongoing digital transformation and progression towards the smart factory.

โ€ข ๐Ÿ—๐Ÿ% of executives stated their companies are experimenting with or implementing at least one metaverse-related use case. On average, companies are running ๐ฆ๐จ๐ซ๐ž ๐ญ๐ก๐š๐ง ๐ฌ๐ข๐ฑ metaverse-related use cases.
โ€ข Companies are generally implementing technologies like data analytics, cloud computing, AI, 5G, and IoT across multiple projects or are experimenting with individual projects.ย However, the current adoption of technologies like edge computing, wearables, extended and mixed reality, and blockchain is relatively low, which are crucial to take the next step in metaverse evolution.
โ€ข Reduced cost was a primary benefit identified for all use cases.
โ€ข Approximately ๐Ÿ‘๐ŸŽ% of the companies are identified as “pacesetters”, which are ahead in metaverse implementation. On average, pacesetters are likely to invest in ๐ž๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ญ ๐จ๐ซ ๐ฆ๐จ๐ซ๐ž use cases and are committing ๐Ÿ‘.๐Ÿ”๐ฑ larger investments to their metaverse initiatives.

Numorpho’s Take:

Our forays into mobility include micro, macro and hyper.

https://interestingengineering.com/science/ai-driven-algo-devises-3d-printed-foam-boosts-helmet-protection-by-25 – Traditional methods of shielding fragile goods and human tissues from impact energy rely on isotropic foam materials. The mechanical properties of these foams are inferior to an emerging class of metamaterials called plate lattices, which have predominantly been fabricated in simple 2.5-dimensional geometries using conventional methods that constrain the feasible design space. In this work, additive manufacturing is used to relax these constraints and realize plate lattice metamaterials with nontrivial, locally varying geometry. The limitations of traditional computer-aided design tools are circumvented and allow the simulation of complex buckling and collapse behaviors without a manual meshing step. By validating these simulations against experimental data from tests on fabricated samples, sweeping exploration of the plate lattice design space is enabled. Numerical and experimental tests demonstrate plate lattices absorb up to six times more impact energy at equivalent densities relative to foams and shield objects from impacts ten times more energetic while transmitting equivalent peak stresses. In contrast to previous investigations of plate lattice metamaterials, designs with nonuniform geometric pre-buckling in the out-of-plane direction is explored and showed that these designs exhibit 10% higher energy absorption efficiency on average and 25% higher in the highest-performing design.
