ABSTRACT
This article outlines the importance of a structured approach for business strategy development, emphasizing the need to balance internal capabilities with external market conditions. The framework guides businesses through three key phases – groundwork (core), battlefield (context), and breakthrough (disruption) – while considering the essential components of scope, logic, and perspective.
In the core strategy phase, businesses focus on building the foundation to optimizing their operations and competitive advantages. The context strategy phase expands on this, considering market landscape changes and ensuring the business remains relevant. Finally, the disruption strategy phase encourages innovation and explores opportunities for transformative growth.
By addressing these strategic elements, companies can adapt to market dynamics, leverage strengths, and identify growth opportunities. The framework aims to help businesses navigate challenges and build sustainable growth strategies by offering a systematic approach to strategy development.

Linothorax – armor from Ancient Greece made of linen and glue was discussed in this Lex Fridman podcast: https://lnkd.in/d_Jj_cQa
Linothorax is a type of upper body armor that was widely used throughout the ancient Mediterranean world. The term “linothorax” comes from the Ancient Greek words “linon” (linen) and “thorax” (breastplate). It was made by layering and gluing together multiple layers of linen fabric, creating a stiff and protective material.
The linothorax was popular from at least the time of Homer through the Hellenistic period and was favored due to its light weight and effectiveness in battle. It offered protection against various weapons, including arrows, swords, and spears. The construction method allowed the armor to be shaped to fit the wearer’s body, providing both comfort and mobility.
Although the exact methods of constructing a linothorax are not entirely clear, it is believed that alternating weaves of linen fabric were saturated with glue or resin and pressed together to form a solid piece of material. This process resulted in a strong and durable armor piece that was an essential part of a warrior’s equipment during ancient times.
Gregory S. Aldrete discusses how things work combining hard sciences with prevalant tools and humanistic perspectives to figure out how things were invented and worked. He talks about battle strategies, armor creation and how culture plays a part in civilizations advance.
At Numorpho Cybernetic Systems (NUMO), in conversing with our advisor for disruptive technologies, Dr. Paddy PADMANABHAN, we have created our perspective in the realm of strategy by merging Musashi’s Five Rings and Tzu’s Art of War with Paddy’s Phoenix Encounter to create a holistic view for progression consisting of groundwork, battlefield and breakthrough.
With this basis on strategy, we are evolving an adaptive engineering approach based on outcomes so that at every step of the process we ask the fundamental questions of why, what, who, where, when and how to tease out the details of the evolution of the design.
Here is a wonderful summary by Pi.ai that conjoint the podcast with our intentional strategy theme:
Title: Lessons from the Roman Empire: Strategy, Innovation, and Business Ascendancy
The Lex Fridman podcast featuring Gregory S. Aldrete offers invaluable insights into the rise and fall of the Roman Empire, highlighting strategic decision-making, technological innovation, and societal progression. These aspects can be applied to the modern business landscape, where companies must adapt and evolve to maintain relevance and achieve success.
In conjunction with Dr. Paddy Padmanabhan’s framework, Numorpho Cybernetic Systems has established a basis for its own strategic approach.
- The Roman Empire’s triumphs and failures provide a historical lens through which we can examine the importance of strategy in defining advancement, maturity, and ascension for any business.
- Numorpho’s article, “Embracing Disruption: Developing a Customer Experience Platform for the Industrial World,” emphasizes the need for businesses to adopt digital transformation, customer centricity, and solution-focused approaches in order to succeed in the rapidly evolving marketplace.
Innovation was a critical factor in the Roman Empire’s success, as they constantly adapted their military strategies and equipment to gain an advantage over their adversaries.
Similarly, businesses today must embrace emerging technologies and innovative solutions, like additive manufacturing and cybernetics, to remain competitive and create value for their customers.
Additionally, the Roman Empire’s decline serves as a warning about the consequences of stagnation and failing to adapt to changing circumstances. Businesses that neglect to prioritize strategic planning, innovation, and customer-centricity risk falling behind in the market and becoming obsolete.
By integrating historical lessons from the Roman Empire with modern business strategies, organizations like Numorpho Cybernetic Systems can develop a comprehensive approach to navigate the ever-changing business landscape. This approach emphasizes the importance of being prepared for disruption, embracing new technologies, and staying focused on the customer experience – ultimately leading to long-term success and industry ascendancy.
