To be or not to be AI

There seems to be a bit of a consternation amongst the literate elite about the rise of ChatGPT and other generative AI tools.
I was listening to a talk which featured one of my favorite authors, Yuval Noah Harari who along with Yoshua Bengio were contemplating on humanity’s future in the age of AI and why sometimes going back to basics is needed to prevent counterfeiting of oneself.  Their contention is that the rise of AI is not akin to the Industrial revolution which is still having fits in progressing, and intelligence such as AI will quickly overtake our limited capabilities and rule over us. But their premise is that humans are all good and the evil resides only in the machines we have made.Evil is not a machine construct – most of our current issues are not due to the rise of technology but because of the differences that exist between us as humans. True that the rise of technology has helped create weapons of mass destruction but the good that it has caused far outweighs the bad.




Nvidia always begins their GTC conference with the theme “I am AI” a palindrome that also signifies their intent in making artificial intelligence a ubiquitous commodity in our existence and progression as a civilization.

For us using AI is not an option but the core of our existence.

At Numorpho Cybernetic Systems (NUMO), we are exploring the use of generative AI for engineering design. We call it Outcome Based Adaptive Engineering and it will munge together parametric modeling, generative design and actionable intelligence to build smart and connected products and services.

We will be testing it out on our first product – a folding helmet that will use ChatGPT with the Wolfram Language plug-in to optimize our folding shapes using cellular automata techniques and to even describe new types of mechanisms.

Our approach for Outcome Based Adaptive Engineering focuses on the desired outcomes and adapts the design process accordingly. This iterative and data-driven approach will lead to the creation of smarter, more connected products and services that meet specific user needs. It will lead to our constructs for Smart Infrastructure where planning and visualization are key towards buiding for sustainment, resilience and security.

Engineering simulation has had its roots in the Aerospace industry and has since been the bane of contention of a few traditional engineering software providers who followed the singular approach – structures using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) or fluid flow aka Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Very recently they have been adding multi-physics models and also including capabilities in Electronics, Magnetism, Acoustics and other scientific domains. With the rise of GPUs, pure software development and its computations has been taken over by hardware with ray-tracing and graphics rendering now being available as a hardware feature rather than in writing code.

The Wolfram plugin makes ChatGPT smarter by giving it access to powerful computation, accurate math, curated knowledge, real-time data and visualization through Wolfram|Alpha and Wolfram Language.

This matches with our contention for data engineering wherein it is a combination of training and physmatic (physics + math) based learning and real time analysis that would help prescribe the outcome. Our Mantra M5 Platform would coordinate Make, Manage, Move, Market and Maintain to drive actionable intelligence at every step of the process.
