To be or not to be AI

There seems to be a bit of a consternation amongst the literate elite about the rise of ChatGPT and other generative AI tools.
I was listening to a talk which featured one of my favorite authors, Yuval Noah Harari who along with Yoshua Bengio were contemplating on humanity’s future in the age of AI and why sometimes going back to basics is needed to prevent counterfeiting of oneself.  Their contention is that the rise of AI is not akin to the Industrial revolution which is still having fits in progressing, and intelligence such as AI will quickly overtake our limited capabilities and rule over us. But their premise is that humans are all good and the evil resides only in the machines we have made.Evil is not a machine construct – most of our current issues are not due to the rise of technology but because of the differences that exist between us as humans. True that the rise of technology has helped create weapons of mass destruction but the good that it has caused far outweighs the bad.

Nvidia always begins their GTC conference with the theme “I am AI” a palindrome that also signifies their intent in making artificial intelligence a ubiquitous commodity in our existence and progression as a civilization.

From ChatGPT:

Nvidia is a leading technology company known for its graphics processing units (GPUs) and its contributions to the field of AI. The “I am AI” theme used at their GTC (GPU Technology Conference) reflects their vision and commitment to advancing the field of artificial intelligence.

The phrase “I am AI” can be interpreted in multiple ways. First, it can emphasize the growing capability and sophistication of AI systems. AI has become increasingly powerful and can perform tasks that were once thought to be exclusive to human intelligence. This phrase signifies the AI’s ability to analyze, understand, and generate human-like responses or behavior.

Secondly, “I am AI” can highlight the integration and pervasive nature of AI in our lives and society. Nvidia’s intention to make AI a ubiquitous commodity reflects the company’s vision for AI technology to be integrated into various domains, such as healthcare, transportation, robotics, and more. By making AI widely accessible, Nvidia aims to drive innovation and enable advancements across multiple industries.

Moreover, the palindrome nature of the phrase “I am AI” adds a linguistic twist that can evoke curiosity and creativity. Palindromes, where a word or phrase reads the same forward and backward, can symbolize balance and symmetry. In the context of AI, it could represent the goal of creating AI systems that complement and enhance human capabilities rather than replacing or dominating them.

The “I am AI” theme used by Nvidia at their GTC conference aligns with the broader discussion on the rise of AI and its implications for humanity.

By adopting the phrase “I am AI,” Nvidia may be emphasizing the transformative potential of AI and its integration into various aspects of our existence and progress as a civilization. It signifies the growing role of AI in shaping our daily lives, industries, and society at large.

The palindrome nature of the phrase, reading the same forward and backward, could also represent a balance or symbiotic relationship between humans and AI. It suggests that AI is not a separate entity or an external force but rather an integral part of our collective human experience.

Nvidia’s intent to make AI a ubiquitous commodity aligns with the idea that AI has the capacity to bring about positive advancements and benefits. However, as discussed earlier, the responsible and ethical development, deployment, and governance of AI are crucial to ensure its positive impact while mitigating potential risks and challenges.

The “I am AI” theme used by Nvidia reflects their vision of AI as an empowering and pervasive force that can contribute to our progress as a civilization, but it also underscores the need for careful consideration and responsible practices in the development and use of AI technologies.

At Numorpho Cybernetic Systems (NUMO), our intention is to utilize Nvidia and its Omniverse platform to synthesize data and information in a digital twine that connects people, process and technology to simulate real world conditions using actionability – appropriate AI to enable the coordination of activities in a themed and concerted progression. “I am AI” for us is a symbiosis of the digital and the physical to coordinate activities in product development, smart manufacturing, re-building infrastructure in the new, and connecting data meaningfully. For us using AI is not an option but the core of our existence.

LITERARY INTERPRETATIONS

Case and point: Here are summaries of poems that I had ChatGPT generate. They are much, much better than any human interpretation, I’ve had over the years:

OUR PERSPECTIVE

At Numorpho Cybernetic Systems (NUMO), we are exploring the use of generative AI for engineering design. We call it Outcome Based Adaptive Engineering and it will munge together parametric modeling, generative design and actionable intelligence to build smart and connected products and services.

We will be testing it out on our first product – a folding helmet that will use ChatGPT with the Wolfram Language plug-in to optimize our folding shapes using cellular automata techniques and to even describe new types of mechanisms.

Our approach for Outcome Based Adaptive Engineering focuses on the desired outcomes and adapts the design process accordingly. This iterative and data-driven approach will lead to the creation of smarter, more connected products and services that meet specific user needs. It will lead to our constructs for Smart Infrastructure where planning and visualization are key towards buiding for sustainment, resilience and security.

ACTIONABLE INTELLIGENCE

“Knowing a great deal is not the same as being smart; intelligence is not information alone but also judgment, the manner in which information is coordinated and used.” — Carl Sagan, Cosmos

Engineering simulation has had its roots in the Aerospace industry and has since been the bane of contention of a few traditional engineering software providers who followed the singular approach – structures using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) or fluid flow aka Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Very recently they have been adding multi-physics models and also including capabilities in Electronics, Magnetism, Acoustics and other scientific domains. With the rise of GPUs, pure software development and its computations has been taken over by hardware with ray-tracing and graphics rendering now being available as a hardware feature rather than in writing code.

The Wolfram plugin makes ChatGPT smarter by giving it access to powerful computation, accurate math, curated knowledge, real-time data and visualization through Wolfram|Alpha and Wolfram Language.

From their announcement:

“One particularly significant thing here is that ChatGPT isn’t just using us to do a “dead-end” operation like show the content of a webpage. Rather, we’re acting much more like a true “brain implant” for ChatGPT—where it asks us things whenever it needs to, and we give responses that it can weave back into whatever it’s doing. It’s rather impressive to see in action. And—although there’s definitely much more polishing to be done—what’s already there goes a long way towards (among other things) giving ChatGPT the ability to deliver accurate, curated knowledge and data—as well as correct, nontrivial computations.

But there’s more too. We already saw examples where we were able to provide custom-created visualizations to ChatGPT. And with our computation capabilities we’re routinely able to make “truly original” content—computations that have simply never been done before. And there’s something else: while “pure ChatGPT” is restricted to things it “learned during its training”, by calling us it can get up-to-the-moment data.”

This matches with our contention for data engineering wherein it is a combination of training and physmatic (physics + math) based learning and real time analysis that would help prescribe the outcome. Our Mantra M5 Platform would coordinate Make, Manage, Move, Market and Maintain to drive actionable intelligence at every step of the process.

MULTI MODAL ORCHESTRATION

We are working on an inference engine orchestrator called the TAU Codex Transformer that will have a multi-modal basis to enable actionable intelligence.

SUMMARY (Generated by ChatGPT)

It’s essential to recognize that AI, like any tool or technology, is neutral in itself. It doesn’t possess inherent intentions or motivations. The actions and consequences associated with AI are a result of human design, deployment, and use. Therefore, any ethical concerns or potential negative outcomes lie in how AI is developed, implemented, and governed by humans.

The concerns surrounding AI often revolve around issues such as job displacement, economic inequality, privacy, bias, and the potential for AI systems to amplify existing human biases or create new ones. These concerns are valid and require careful consideration and proactive measures to address.

It’s important to acknowledge that technology, including AI, has the potential to bring tremendous benefits and progress to society. It has revolutionized various industries, improved healthcare, enhanced communication, and increased access to information. The positive impact of technology cannot be overlooked.

However, as with any powerful tool, there are risks and challenges that need to be addressed. This requires responsible development, ethical guidelines, and thoughtful governance to ensure AI is used for the benefit of humanity as a whole. The focus should be on understanding the potential risks and mitigating them through regulations, transparency, accountability, and inclusive decision-making processes.

In summary, the rise of AI is a complex and multifaceted topic. While it offers great potential for positive impact, it also raises important questions and concerns. It is crucial to approach the development and deployment of AI with a thoughtful and responsible mindset to ensure that its benefits are maximized while minimizing the risks.

In a recent summit on Digital Manufacturing there was a session on ChatGPT’s influence and this comment was made: The barn doors are open and the horses have left the stable. It will be difficult to reign them back again.
