20240921 – Orchestrating the Future: Large World Models and the DTWM™

At Numorpho Cybernetic Systems (NUMO), we’re revolutionizing industrial automation with our Digital Twine World Model (DTWM™) reference architecture, leveraging the power of Large World Models (LWMs).

What are LWMs?

A Large World Model (LWM) is a digital spatial representation of a physical scenario by creating complex architectural models, simulating real-world physics, and designing intricate products.

Large World Models (LWMs) are an emerging type of artificial intelligence model that aims to understand and interact with the physical 3D world, similar to how Large Language Models (LLMs) process and generate text.

For an industrial setting, LWMs represent the Industrial Metaverse.

What is the DTWM?

We call our second tenet in our process engineering platform Mantra M5, the Digital Twine World Model (DTWM) reference architecture. The DTWM is an assemblage of people, processes and platforms that need to be organized to achieve coordination, optimization, and proactive assertions for the building of the tapestry of Industry 4.0 and its progression to Industry and Services 5.0. It facilitates Mantra M5’s five themes of make, manage, move, market and maintain by orchestrating and facilitating collaboration, blueprinting and operational enablement of all process related aspects.

We’re exploring the idea of building LWMs based on multi-faceted representations of physical objects and their interactions, similar to how knowledge graphs underpin LLMs. This would allow for more comprehensive and flexible digital twin models within the DTWM framework.

Integrating LWMs within the DTWM for product lifecycle management can bring significant benefits:

  • Upstream (Product Development):
    • Virtual prototyping and simulation of product designs
    • Predictive analysis of product performance and reliability
  • Midstream (Manufacturing):
    • Optimization of production processes and logistics
    • Real-time monitoring and control of manufacturing operations
  • Downstream (Aftermarket):
    • Predictive maintenance and proactive service scheduling
    • Enhanced customer experiences through digital twins of products

Reference Architecture:

Connecting the dots between people, processes and systems

In the above diagram, we have utilized the groupings from the Capabilities Periodic Table (CPT) of the Digital Twin Consortium to represent the Enterprise Value drivers to build out a connected framework of digital threads and digital twins.

In our other elucidations of the digital twine, we have represented remote additive manufacturing in austere conditions, composite manufacturing to re-engineer parts, modernization of the organic industrial base, connected factory to automate manufacturing, a future factory digital twin playbook and a play for infrastructure for smart cities. We have also blueprinted use cases for predictive maintenance, the asset management for AR/VR plays, lift-and-shift ERP and MES migration to the cloud, omni-channel marketplace, and enabling financial consolidation.

Key Points:

  1. Large World Models (LWMs) are emerging AI systems designed to understand and interact with the 3D physical world, similar to how Large Language Models process text.
  2. Our DTWM reference architecture divides processes into upstream, midstream, and downstream segments, providing a clear basis for progression in various domains:
    • Product Lifecycle Management
    • Industrial Automation
    • Infrastructure Build
    • Smart City Interactions
  3. DTWM enables:
    • Collaboration between disparate systems
    • Coordination of digital threads with historical and real-time data
    • Manifestation of digital twins for physical-digital interrelationships
    • Management of people, processes, and technology
  4. We’re using NVIDIA Omniverse and Alliance for OpenUSD (AOUSD) to create a standards-based comprehensive platform that integrates with tools from providers like Ansys, Autodesk, Dassault Systèmes, Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence, PTC and Siemens.
  5. Our approach aligns with Industry 5.0 principles, focusing on sustainability, human-centricity, and resilience.

By combining LWMs with our DTWM architecture, we’re creating a powerful framework for the future of industrial automation, enabling more efficient, adaptive, and intelligent systems across various industries.

Summary:

Numorpho’s DTWM™ Reference Architecture is a framework designed to facilitate the integration and synchronization of systems, products, and assets across an organization. Key features of the Automate architecture include:

  • A modular and scalable framework for integrating data from various sources, including databases, ERP systems, and IoT devices
  • Three layers – perception, cognition, and conation – that align with cognitive processes for decision-making and action
  • A modular design for the perception layer, enabling businesses to choose the best-fitting component and workflow
  • Cognition layer components for real-time reasoning, optimization, and simulation
  • Conation layer for seamless actuation of insights gained from the cognition layer, driving actionable results.

By leveraging the multi-faceted object representations and simulation capabilities of LWMs, the DTWM can provide a comprehensive, data-driven approach to managing the entire product lifecycle, from initial design to aftermarket services. This integration can help organizations achieve greater efficiency, quality, and responsiveness throughout the product development and delivery process.

As we build smart and connected products at the mHUB Innovation center and explore smart manufacturing plays at MxD along with their ecosystem of Manufacturing USA institutes, the DTWM will provide a strong basis for resiliency and sustainability for new and existing processes by providing a digital equivalent for simulation, optimization, harmonization and the enablement of actionable intelligence.

The Digital Twine World Model™ Reference Architecture aims to help businesses create a connected and agile digital ecosystem that supports end-to-end process optimization, real-time decision-making, and improved collaboration between systems and stakeholders. This architecture is designed to adapt to unique business needs and serve as a foundation for building smart, connected products and services.
