SECTION 1: EMBRACING PROGRESS

In speaking of progress being the mode for mankind, Victor Hugo has this to say:

  • In saying no to progress, it is not the future which they condemn, but themselves. They give themselves a melancholy disease; they inoculate themselves with the past. There is but one way of refusing tomorrow, that is to die.
  • Emergencies have always been necessary to progress. It was darkness which produced the lamp. It was fog that produced the compass. It was hunger that drove us to exploration. And it took a depression to teach us the real value of a job.
  • The brutalities of progress are called revolutions. When they are over, we realize this: that the human race has been roughly handled, but that it has advanced.

In the Coming Wave, Mustafa Suleyman has forewarned us about the approaching technological singularity comprising of AI, synthetic biology and other emerging technologies that will forever change the way we live.

Lex Fridman via his amazing podcasts in interviewing folks like Elon Musk, Yann LeCun, @Neri Oxman, and Roger Penrose has dug deep into the implications of the new wave in terms of understanding and utilizing philosophy, science, technology, economics and politics.

We, at Numorpho Cybernetic Systems (NUMO) have been closely following these advances and are putting together an appropriate framework to build inference engines that are intelligent, appropriate, and ethical. We are including AI in our process engineering framework in a graded fashion by adding responsible, verifiable, explainable and accountable constructs that are validated by engineering simulation and thorough analysis. These are further utilized to train and reinforce the neural-net elements in our platform.

We are indebted to our partners in this endeavor (more recently with Arduino, Würth Additive Group, Markforged, Opscura), and the organizations that we are part of mHUB and MxD, and their ecosystem where we are building our thesis for high-tech, hard tech and deep tech. I am also thankful to our advisors: Shree Vinekar, MD, Scott McGowan, Paddy PADMANABHAN, ShiSh Shridhar and arun anant for having channeled us, pushed us and questioned us along our journey.

SECTION 2: OUR EXPERIMENT WITH MAKING SENSE OF NONSENSE

“I can be anything you want me to be” are poignant lines from by a girl at a bar in a yester year movie. Truer with LLMs today, where chat bots run by large language models (LLMs) can suggest, assume roles, reason and even falsify responses based on prompts. LLMs are us. They are the collective knowledge of humanity and mirror the best of our intentions and the worst of our impulses.

AI is inevitable.
AI is going to be significantly smarter than humans.
In boldly going to uncharted territories, we are exploring the unknown.

Bad things will happen!

In a series of Episodes on “making sense out of nonsense”, we sequentially query some LLMs:

  • Pi from Inflection AI,
  • Claude from Anthropic,
  • ChatGPT from OpenAI,
  • Gemini (formerly Bard) from Google,
  • Bing and Dall-e from Microsoft (powered by GPT-4), and
  • Llama from Meta.ai
  • Perplexity.ai

to respond to a theme, roleplay characters and even suggest a progression path for Numorpho Cybernetic Systems where we are building a platform for process engineering called Mantra M5 to coordinate the activities of make, manage, move, market and maintain. Would have loved to use Grok from X.ai since it is also based on the Hitchhiker’s Guide, but it is only available as a Premium + service.

The episodes explore Numorpho’s progression into the future by combining excitement and caution as we design and define the exacting details of our process engineering platform, the Mantra M5. It will be based on generative AI and computational methods to enable actionable intelligence to convert meaning to motion.

I have been exploring a novel way to work with LLMs like ChatGPT, PI and Claude by creating roleplaying scenarios that have been very successful in teasing out elements of the theme for collaborative discussions which in some ways is sometimes more effective ways than talking to real experts.

More recently (since episode 29) we assemble a cast of characters and engage LLMs in a fruitful discussion on the future, the outcome or the responsible path to take:

In Episode 29, we talk about “I and AI” and the future Nature of Being (Same prompts for all LLMs):

Here is a wonderful quote generated by Meta AI as I queried her to summarize the nature of being as we become more merged with AI:

“The union of ‘I and AI’ is not a fusion of opposites, but a celebration of complementarity, where human wisdom and artificial intelligence entwine to create a new harmony, a new whole, and a new world.”

In Episode 30, we talk about ethics and responsibility when it comes to AI:

In Episode 31, we talk about a framework for Strategy and what is required for a company to succeed in the new age (thank you Dr. Paddy Padmanabhan):

  • Claude and Pi (The Five Rings, The Art of War and the Phoenix Encounter Method): Episode 31

In Episode 32, we ask of consulting companies and system integrators on how they plan to work with companies in fitting them to the coming wave:

This Episode has been converted to a full audio video podcast as part of our Cybernetic Shift series on Redefining Engineering with AI, this: Podcast 001 – Riding the AI Wave: A Dialog on the Future of Technology and Business

In Episode 33, we talk about Cloud Provisioning by moving back and forth in time from 1990 to 2030:

In Episode 34, we talk about computation and cognition in making sense of nonsense:

In Episode 35, we talk about process engineering:

Episode 36 is the definition of a Lexicon for fine tuning the generative AI model for Mantra M5:

  • ChatGPT (internal to enable Knowledge Graphs): Episode 36

In Episode 37, we discuss our future as a society:

  • ChatGPT (Dystopian Society – The Brave New World and 1984): Episode 37

In Episode 38, we talk about Digital Twins, animation and augmented reality:

In Episode 39, we talk about hallucinations by having different LLMs summarize short stories:

In Episode 40, we engage in an elenchus style debate with Socrates, Plato and their cohorts on Project Morpheus that consist of building an MemGPT operating system using multiple LLMs and RLAIF (Reinforced Learning with AI feedback) for synthetic training:

  • Bard, Pi (non-technical evolution of an architecture) – Episode 40

Here is an apt summary for the conversation: In the end, the future of LLMs is not written in code, but in the stories we tell them. The values we imbue, the questions we ask, these will shape their clay. So, let us be wise storytellers, crafting narratives of empathy and justice in our ever-burning quest for knowledge.

In Episode 41, we talk about the nature of reality and Lacan’s three registers: Symbolic, Imaginary and Real laying the foundation for Mantra M5:

In Episode 42, we summarize our entire series in the form of a Nightline style news program using quotes context from The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy:

SECTION 3: THE UNDERPINNINGS FOR OUR MANTRA M5 PLATFORM

For Numorpho, cybernetics is the fine balance between command, control and communications using feedback as the basis for understanding and reinforcing the mechanisms at play between observer and the observed to enable intelligent interactions. It is comprised of systems (the what) and process engineering (the how). Process engineering entails enabling the systems related activities to make, manage, move, market and maintain (the five m’s or M5) in the domains of innovation, automation, integration and enablement.

Our Mantra M5 platform would be a new way of building solutions not only for process related progression but also to do extensive research, ideation, simulation and iteration on development with:

  1. language-based clarity,
  2. computational efficiency, and
  3. actionable intelligence

These three characteristics – cognition, computation and inference – will seamlessly merge together to make generative AI a formidable tool for our progression as a civilization where we need to move with purposeful alacrity and ethical responsibility. Lacan should be so proud of us using his registers finally and it’s the real Westworld (without the immoral conduct against the hosts I hope)!

Depicted below is our interaction diagram for process engineering that conjoins the elements of conversation, computation and inference utilizing prompt engineering, simulations, synthetic data generation and digital twinning to convert meaning to motion, an outcome we term as actionable intelligence. Embedded in its construct is the philosophy of Lacan based on the three registers: Symbolic, Imaginary and Real.

NUMO_ProcessEngineering_Interaction_L_anim_5

It uses the concept of scaffolding where LLM is just one piece of the larger architecture for engineering processes. It will be propped by prompt engineering, synthetic data generation and deep learning surrogates. Listed in the reference below is how we are theming and managing the detailed creation of our Mantra M5 platform. These are and will be summarized in LinkedIn and based on a series of dialogs with our chief advisor, Dr. Shreekumar Vinekar.

SECTION 4: CONVERTING MEANING TO MOTION

“Just do it” is the slogan of the famous footwear brand Nike. It also seems to be the go forward model for LLMs today – they just spew out content and it is upon us, the humans to make sense of it. Humans also have a choice to do it or not unlike machines and AI. What if tomorrow’s systems had the ability to ascertain decision making, what if they were rational…. what if they sometimes took a break? At Numorpho, we call them dream states where they refine their manifold using virtual simulations. These are some of the things we will explore along our way to make solutions conversational, verifiable and actionable.

We are excited about the progress made thus far and it will be a unique construct to enable innovation, automation, integration and proactive enablement. As a simulated Lex Fridman said in one of the episodes:

For in this collective creation, in this Socratic dialogue between man and machine, lies the potential for a world where language illuminates, information empowers, and intelligence serves as a bridge, not a barrier, between our minds and the vast mysteries that await.

I look forward to building a team, partnering with forward thinking companies, accepting meaningful investments and theming the growth of Numorpho in a pragmatic and targeted fashion.

Somebody rightly said: Change improves the past, but transformation defines the future, but we need to correctly assess the possibilities (what we can do), the responsibilities (what we should do) and our duties (what we must do) as we chart our path. We look forward to the tomorrows and to be able to provide actionable transformations to humanity’s progression as a civilization.

I would like to close with these pertinent lines from Invictus:

It matters not how strait the gate,     How charged with punishments the scroll,   I am the master of my fate:  I am the captain of my soul.

It is our future, and ours to define.

Summary

The “20240101 – Happy New Year” post (Numorpho’s EVERYTHING CONNECTED) is a kind of manifesto / greeting as the organization enters 2024. Its tone is both celebratory and visionary. Below are its key themes and structure:

Opening & Tone Setting

    • The post begins with a new-year greeting: “Happy New Year, one and all.”

    • It frames the new year as a turning point, a moment when “new forces … are beginning to define, refine, empower and control our existence and our very essence of being.”

    • It invokes progress as essential to humanity’s future, quoting Victor Hugo about refusing tomorrow being akin to self-condemnation or stagnation.

The Coming Wave & Technological Imperative

    • The author references The Coming Wave by Mustafa Suleyman, which warns of a convergence of AI, synthetic biology, and related technologies that will transform life.

    • The post also points to Lex Fridman’s interviews across science, philosophy, technology, and politics as influencing the worldview.

    • Within Numorpho, the team is actively tracking and integrating such advances, especially in AI, with a focus on building inference systems that are responsible, verifiable, explainable, and accountable.

The “Making Sense of Nonsense” Series & LLM Experiments

    • Numorpho is running a multi-episode series titled Making Sense of Nonsense, in which they query various LLMs (e.g. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Pi, Llama, etc.).

    • These episodes serve multiple roles: as explorations of philosophical, technical, and strategic themes; as roleplay prompts to surface insights; and as a method to co-design the architecture of their platform.

    • Starting around episode 29, the format includes multiple versions (across LLMs) of themes like “I and AI,” ethics, strategy, computation & cognition, digital twins, hallucinations, and so on.

    • This experimentation feeds into the broader thesis for their system, dubbed Mantra M5, intended to coordinate process engineering across “make, manage, move, market and maintain” (the “5 M’s”).

Vision for Mantra M5 & Philosophical Underpinnings

  • REVIEW BY CLAUDE

Detailed Summary

This comprehensive New Year 2024 manifesto from Numorpho Cybernetic Systems serves as both a philosophical statement and technical roadmap for their AI-driven process engineering platform, Mantra M5.

Core Themes and Vision

The document opens by framing 2024 as a pivotal moment where emerging technologies—particularly AI and synthetic biology—are fundamentally reshaping human existence. Drawing on Victor Hugo’s philosophy that refusing progress is equivalent to self-condemnation, the authors position technological advancement as both inevitable and essential to humanity’s survival.

The Coming Wave Context

The manifesto references Mustafa Suleyman’s “The Coming Wave” as a warning about the approaching technological singularity, while citing Lex Fridman’s explorations with thought leaders like Elon Musk, Yann LeCun, and Roger Penrose. Numorpho positions itself as actively preparing for this wave by building AI systems that are not just intelligent, but responsible, verifiable, explainable, and accountable.

The “Making Sense of Nonsense” Experiment

A centerpiece of the document is Numorpho’s innovative methodology of querying multiple Large Language Models (LLMs) including Pi, Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Bing, Llama, and Perplexity. Starting with Episode 29, they created roleplay scenarios across different LLMs to explore critical themes:

    • Episode 29: “I and AI” – The future nature of being and human-AI merger
    • Episode 30: Ethics, responsibility, and building a “Constitution for AI”
    • Episode 31: Strategic frameworks using The Five Rings and Art of War
    • Episode 32: How consulting companies should adapt to the coming wave
    • Episodes 33-42: Topics ranging from cloud provisioning, computation and cognition, process engineering, digital twins, hallucinations in AI, and societal futures

This experimental approach serves multiple purposes: philosophical exploration, technical validation, and collaborative design of their platform architecture.

The Mantra M5 Platform

At the heart of the document is the vision for Mantra M5, a process engineering platform designed to coordinate the “Five M’s”: Make, Manage, Move, Market, and Maintain. The platform aims to:

    • Convert meaning to motion through “actionable intelligence”
    • Integrate language-based clarity, computational efficiency, and actionable intelligence
    • Use scaffolding architecture where LLMs are one component alongside prompt engineering, synthetic data generation, deep learning surrogates, and digital twins
    • Employ “dream states” where systems refine their understanding through virtual simulations rather than constantly operating

Philosophical Foundations

The platform is grounded in several theoretical frameworks:

    • Cybernetics: Understanding feedback loops between observer and observed
    • Lacan’s Three Registers: Symbolic (language/meaning), Imaginary (models/simulations), and Real (ground truth/validation)
    • Ethical AI: Embedding values of responsibility, verifiability, and accountability into system design

Key Insights on AI’s Nature

The document acknowledges several uncomfortable truths:

    • AI is inevitable and will become significantly smarter than humans
    • LLMs mirror both humanity’s best intentions and worst impulses
    • “Bad things will happen” as we explore unknown territories
    • The future of AI depends on the stories and values we embed in them

Partnerships and Ecosystem

Numorpho credits their progress to partnerships with Arduino, Würth Additive Group, Markforged, and Opscura, as well as their involvement with mHUB and MxD ecosystems. They acknowledge advisors including Dr. Shree Vinekar for channeling their vision.

Poetic Reflection

The document includes a creative experiment where different LLMs were prompted to write poems with the theme “Before it Rains,” demonstrating how three simple words evoke varied sentiments from non-human language models—raising questions about what it means to be human.

Call to Action

The manifesto closes with a call to:

    • Build a team and secure meaningful investments
    • Partner with forward-thinking companies
    • Correctly assess possibilities (what we can do), responsibilities (what we should do), and duties (what we must do)
    • Define humanity’s future with purposeful alacrity and ethical responsibility

The document concludes with lines from “Invictus”—”I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul”—emphasizing human agency in shaping the AI-driven future.

Detailed Summary of the Blog Post

The blog post at https://numorpho.org/2024/01/01/20240101-happy-new-year/ is a reflective and forward-looking manifesto written by Nitin Uchil, the Founder, CEO, and Technical Evangelist of Numorpho Cybernetic Systems (NUMO). Published on January 1, 2024, it serves as a New Year’s address, blending philosophical musings, technical insights, and strategic announcements for the company’s 2024 vision. The piece is deeply influenced by recent advancements in AI, synthetic biology, and cybernetics, positioning Numorpho as a proactive player in ethical technology development. It draws on literature, podcasts, and personal experiments to argue for harnessing AI’s potential while emphasizing human agency, responsibility, and collaboration. The tone is optimistic yet cautionary, invoking themes of progress as both revolutionary and brutal.

Structure and Key Sections

    1. Introduction: Embracing Progress in a Transformative Year Uchil opens with a warm “Happy 2024, one and all,” framing the new year as a threshold where converging technologies—AI, synthetic biology, and beyond—will “define, refine, empower, and control our existence.” He quotes Victor Hugo extensively to underscore progress’s inevitability: “In saying no to progress, it is not the future which they condemn, but themselves. They give themselves a melancholy disease; they inoculate themselves with the past.” And, “The brutalities of progress are called revolutions. When they are over, we realize this: that the human race has been roughly handled, but that it has advanced.” This sets a philosophical tone, warning that rejecting innovation is akin to self-destruction, while embracing it demands courage.
    2. Navigating the “Coming Wave” of Technology Referencing Mustafa Suleyman’s book The Coming Wave, Uchil discusses the impending technological singularity that could reshape society, economy, and governance. He highlights insights from Lex Fridman’s podcasts, featuring experts like Elon Musk, Yann LeCun, Neri Oxman, and Roger Penrose, which span philosophy, science, and politics. Numorpho’s response? Developing “inference engines that are intelligent, appropriate, and ethical,” integrated into their process engineering platform, Mantra M5. This involves principles of responsibility, verifiability, explainability, and accountability to mitigate risks. The section argues that proactive ethical design is essential to turn potential chaos into controlled advancement.
    3. Numorpho’s Ecosystem and Milestones Uchil celebrates recent partnerships with Arduino, Würth Additive Group, Markforged, and Opscura, alongside involvement in innovation hubs like mHUB and MxD, which focus on high-tech, hard tech, and deep tech. He thanks advisors including Shree Vinekar (MD), Scott McGowan, Paddy Padmanabhan, ShiSh Shridhar, and Arun Anant for their guidance. This section highlights collaboration as the backbone of Numorpho’s growth, emphasizing how external networks fuel internal innovation.
    4. The “Making Sense of Nonsense” Series: LLM Experiments A core highlight is Numorpho’s experimental series, where Uchil queries various Large Language Models (LLMs) like Pi (Inflection AI), Claude (Anthropic), ChatGPT (OpenAI), Gemini (Google), Bing/DALL-E (Microsoft), Llama (Meta.ai), and Perplexity.ai. These “episodes” explore themes relevant to Mantra M5, which orchestrates processes across the “Five M’s”: make, manage, move, market, and maintain. Key episodes include:
      • Episode 29: “I and AI” – A meditation on human-AI symbiosis, quoting Meta AI: “The union of ‘I and AI’ is not a fusion of opposites, but a celebration of complementarity, where human wisdom and artificial intelligence entwine to create a new harmony, a new whole, and a new world.”
      • Episode 30 – Ethics in AI development.
      • Episode 31 – Strategic frameworks from The Five Rings, The Art of War, and the Phoenix Encounter Method (linked to a whitepaper).
      • Episode 32 – The role of consultants in the AI era, adapted into a podcast: Riding the AI Wave: A Dialog on the Future of Technology and Business (part of The Cybernetic Shift series).
      • Episode 36 – A lexicon for fine-tuning Mantra M5’s generative AI (whitepaper linked).
      • Episode 37 – Dystopian futures echoing Brave New World and 1984 (whitepaper).
      • Episode 40 – A Socratic debate on Project Morpheus using MemGPT and RLAIF, concluding: “In the end, the future of LLMs is not written in code, but in the stories we tell them.” Uchil notes that these role-playing sessions with LLMs often yield insights rivaling human experts, but stresses the need for human oversight to infuse ethics and creativity.
    5. Mantra M5: Bridging Meaning to Motion The post’s technical heart is Mantra M5, Numorpho’s platform for process engineering. It integrates generative AI, computational simulations, and cybernetic feedback to deliver “actionable intelligence.” Core elements include:
      • Language-based clarity via conversational AI and prompt engineering.
      • Computational efficiency through synthetic data and simulations.
      • Alignment with Lacan’s registers (Symbolic for language, Imaginary for perception, Real for action) and cybernetic observer-observed loops. An embedded animated diagram (NUMO_ProcessEngineering_Interaction_L_anim_5) visualizes this: conversation feeds into computation, yielding inference that scaffolds LLMs, digital twins, and real-world actions. Uchil introduces “dream states” for systems—virtual refinements during idle periods, akin to human sleep. The vision? Transforming abstract “meaning” (human intent) into tangible “motion” (outcomes) across innovation, automation, integration, and enablement.
    6. Ethical and Philosophical Underpinnings Uchil candidly states: “AI is inevitable. AI is going to be significantly smarter than humans. In boldly going to uncharted territories, we are exploring the unknown. Bad things will happen!” He advocates embedding values like empathy and justice, proposing a “Constitution for AI” and rational accountability. LLMs, he argues, reflect humanity’s collective narratives, so their future depends on the stories we craft. A simulated Lex Fridman dialogue reinforces this: “In this Socratic dialogue between man and machine, lies the potential for a world where language illuminates, information empowers, and intelligence serves as a bridge…”
    7. Creative Experiment: Poetic Prompts on “Before It Rains” To probe AI’s emotional depth, Uchil prompts LLMs with “Before it rains,” yielding evocative poems:
      • ChatGPT: A reflective muse on life’s cues.
      • Gemini: Urban introspection on fleeting light.
      • Claude: A call to personal change. This ties into broader questions of creativity and humanity. Uchil links to his own poem on the theme, blurring human-AI creative boundaries.
    8. Conclusion: A Call to Purposeful Action Uchil expresses thrill at Numorpho’s trajectory, inviting partnerships for team-building, funding, and joint ventures. He balances possibility (“what we can do”), ethics (“what we should do”), and imperative (“what we must do”). The post ends with William Ernest Henley’s Invictus: “It matters not how strait the gate… I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul.” References include prior series episodes (1-28) and Mantra M5 briefs (1-81), with links to whitepapers and podcasts.

SECTION 7: AN ODE TO OUR ENDEAVORS

Here is something appropriate I tried with Large Language Models (llm). Using the theme “Before it rains”, I wanted them to create a short poem and also reconstruct one of my poems in this format.

Before It Rains | NOT RANDOM THOUGHTS – NI+IN UCHIL’S BLOG (wordpress.com)

It is also an experiment on what does it take to be human. Some of my favorite lines are:

ChatGPT:
Before it rains, I sit and muse,
On life’s grand wonders and subtle cues,
Moments fleeting, like passing trains,
Reflect on living, before it rains.

Gemini:
Before it rains, I watch the city gleam,
A million windows, reflecting fading light.
Each one a story, a forgotten dream,
Lost in the hustle of the endless night.

The world’s a stage, a story yet to write,
Laughter and tears, a symphony of light.
We search for answers, in the fading light,
Before it rains.

Claude:
Before it rains, I’ll make a change,
To leave a mark upon this earth.
To break the mold and rearrange,
And find the courage, prove my worth.
Before it rains, I’ll seize the day,
And cherish life, come what may.

It is amazing how 3 simple words could invoke such varied sentiments, emotions and feelings in non-human language-trained models!
